The Software Asset Management (SAM) Analyst oversees the organization’s software assets to ensure compliance, cost efficiency, and effective utilization. This role manages software licensing, optimizes usage, and mitigates risks related to non-compliance. It assists the SAM Manager in collaborating with IT, procurement, and compliance teams to develop and enforce policies and processes.

Day-to-day involves implementing the SAM strategy aligned with organizational goals, monitoring license usage, and managing audits with vendors and stakeholders. Professionals track renewals with software product owners to avoid service interruptions. They analyze usage data for optimization and partner on negotiations with vendors.

Collaboration spans IT, security, procurement, finance, and compliance teams to align SAM with IT governance. Stakeholders are educated on policies, license agreements, and processes. Integration of SAM tools with enterprise systems like ITSM and CMDB is driven.

Reporting includes generating insights on usage, compliance, and cost savings, plus tracking KPIs like compliance rates and audit outcomes. Recommendations inform future purchasing based on trends and needs. This supports strategic decision-making in a dynamic finance environment.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in Information Technology or a related field (Preferred)
  • 8+ years of experience in IT Asset Management or Software Asset Management, focusing on software licensing, compliance, and process
  • Certified Software Asset Manager (CSAM) (Preferred)
  • ITIL Foundation Certification (Preferred)
  • Strong knowledge of software licensing models (e.g., SaaS, perpetual, enterprise agreements)
  • Proficiency with SAM tools (e.g., Flexera, ServiceNow, Snow Software)
  • Experience with data analysis and reporting tools to derive actionable insights
  • Detail-oriented with excellent organizational and analytical skills

Responsibilities

  • Implement and deliver against the defined SAM Strategy and aligned organizational goals
  • Define and maintain policies, processes, and controls for managing software assets
  • Ensure compliance with software licensing agreements, regulatory requirements, and industry standards
  • Monitor software license usage to ensure compliance and prevent over- or under-licensing
  • Manage software audits, coordinating with vendors and internal stakeholders
  • Partner with stakeholders to analyze software usage data for cost-saving opportunities
  • Maintain software asset inventory using SAM tools (e.g., Flexera, Snow Software)
  • Generate reports on software usage, compliance status, and cost savings
